On Saturday, January 11th, volunteers planted the first 26 trees of the new year on Allston Street in the Houston Heights West Historic District.
Urban Forestry’s planting chairs Jonathan Smulian & Jack Lucas identified an area in the historic Heights neighborhoods without trees and teamed with Allston block captain Nancy Morillo to reach out to neighbors in the area. Volunteers arrived on a chilly Saturday morning to plant 5 gallon trees in the right-of-way. Urban Forester Joe Parrott of Bartlett Tree Experts, and Jim Bennett (our Boulevard Beautification chair) guided volunteers, showing them the best way to plant the trees, and advising on follow-up care.
The 2020 mission for the HHA’s Urban Forestry Committee is to plant more right-of-way trees by partnering with eager block captains in areas desiring trees. Find out more at the March 9th HHA Community Meeting – Be a Heights Green Thumb.
