October 2024 Yard of the Month – 739 E. 13th ½ St.

Emily & Joel Taylor moved into their 1st home, a Heights Bungalow in 2021 and looked forward to renovating and providing more vegetation to their front yard. Shortly after moving in, Emily & Joel built their cottage style garden beds which framed the porch and front windows to fulfill her hobby of gardening. Emily has been gardening since she was a kid and has fond memories of the time spent gardening and learning about various plants from her mom and grandma in Louisiana. In April & May of 2024, the Taylors personally undertook a massive front yard overhaul. A front iron fence was installed and Emily & Joel spent every weekend digging up turf, amending the clay soil and designing and installing wrap around garden beds.

The yard is broken up into 4 different planting beds which include cluster planted seasonal annuals mixed with herbs such as rosemary and lavender, and plenty of pollinators such as pentas, salvia, and plumbago. A mix of English cottage style garden and French Paterre gardens – also drawing inspiration from common garden plantings from their home state of Louisiana – Camellias, Magnolias, Azaleas, Agapanthus, and Iris.

Special garden features include Emily’s newly planted cut garden rose bed, which should be showing its fall flush soon. Emily has been passionately collecting and growing roses for the past few years and you can find 20 rose varieties incorporated throughout her gardens which include floribundas, hybrid teas, climbing roses and David Austin roses – a few favorites include Love Song, Princess Charlene Demanaco, Grande Dame, Pretty Lady, Munstead Wood – and cannot forget the Peggy Martin rose which puts on a beautiful show every spring.

The Taylor’s have more plans to continue to expand their beds in October now that the weather is starting to cool down. You’ll likely see them outside in the morning or evenings enjoying their new garden from their porch swing!” We would like to thank Another Place in Time for a very nice gift card awarded to our October 2024 yard of the month recipients.
