Congratulations to our October Yard of the Month: Eric Gerard Martinez at 827 Nicholson
If you are reading this, you are one of the last survivors…our October yard of the month has been taken over by gold-gilded skeletons. With any luck they will be destroyed in time for the holidays by 100 poinsettia plants.
Eric Gerard Martinez’s yard has incorporated a mix of macho ferns, ligularias, cascading belles, sea hibiscus and birds of paradise that is evolving into a New Orleans style tropical garden. If you notice on the right side of the yard, you will see a fairy garden. If you are lucky, you might see some fairies fluttering about. In addition, you will see two crepe Myrtles that flank a black wrought iron gate, which leads to their secret garden. Fairies have been known to go here for an evening shower in the fountain.
On the left side of the yard, they balance things out with their lovely fruit bearing olive tree, where they always enjoy its bountiful harvest. This year, they focused on annual red and white flowers – specifically vincas and dianthus – where they then incorporated these colors into their Halloween Dia de los Muertos decor. As you can see, their giant 13-foot skeleton is draped in a lovely display of coordinating silk florals and pampas fronds. Feel free to stop on by and treat yourself to a spooky ooky fright!
We would like to thank Joshua’s Native Plants for the very nice gift certificate awarded to our October yard of the month recipient. Joshua’s is located here in the Heights at 502 West 18th St.
