Meeting Recording: 11th Street Improvements Update and Q&A with the City of Houston
The City of Houston Planning and Development & Public Works departments presented an update on the planned improvement project at the February meeting of the Houston Heights Association Land Use Committee. The City presented its latest plans after incorporating community feedback into the design of the project regarding the concrete median in the two-lane configuration between Shepherd and Yale, pedestrian refuge islands at intersections like Nicholson, and physically protected bikeways. The meeting was held virtually on Monday, February 7th at 6:30pm, and unfortunately the meeting reached the [...]
The Team Behind the Scenes of True North
Linda and Simon Eyles. After several years working with the sculpture project, two of our curators have decided to step away from their duties. Linda and Simon played important roles in the success of True North during their tenure, bringing acumen for business and marketing, a keen eye for fine art and design, and a strong tie to the community. The Eyles say, “We’ve loved every minute of our time working on this incredible public art installation. It has brought so much to our neighborhood and to [...]
True North 2021. The nine-month sculpture exhibition comes to a close.
True North 2021 sculptures will soon move on to their next destinations. We become so accustomed to seeing them along the esplanade’s park-like setting that it can be a little disconcerting when one-by-one they seemingly vanish into thin air. A tremendous amount of time and resources are spent creating, constructing, delivering, and installing—then deinstalling—sculptures of this scope. We appreciate all of the artists who have participated in the temporary public sculpture project this year—and going back to 2013! It has been the committee’s honor and privilege to [...]

94-Years-Young Artist David Adickes Is Not Slowing Down
True North was thrilled to secure the iconic artist’s work for the 2021 Heights Boulevard sculpture project. David Adickes has been a vital part of the Houston art scene for over 65 years. A native of Huntsville, Texas, Adickes moved to Houston upon his completion of two years of art studies at the Atelier Fernand Leger in Paris. By the end of that year (1951), he had garnered a first-place finish and a one-man show at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Longing to broaden his horizons [...]
Over 1,000 Runners Take to the Boulevard for 2021 Fun Run
After a completely virtual Fun Run in 2020, we were thrilled to offer our first-ever hybrid Fun Run this year, with both an in-person and a virtual option. The in-person option took place on Saturday, September 18 and we had over 1,000 runners from the Heights and all around Houston join us to go for a new PR. This year’s Boulevard Blitz version of our annual Fun Run saw runners safely spaced out in waves before heading down scenic Heights Boulevard for their choice of 10K Run, [...]
