Joseph Havel’s On History in the 1300 block of Heights Boulevard
Houston likes to claim the artist Joseph Havel as our own, but in actuality, his works are found in exhibitions and public collections throughout the world. Across from Heights Neighborhood Library on the esplanade of Heights Boulevard, Havel’s sculpture “On History”—a 9-foot tall patinaed bronze figure seemingly reaching toward the sky—has even more to behold in its fine detail. Congratulations to our September Yard of the Month: Maureen & Lucky Sahualla at 334 W. 22nd Maureen and Lucky Sahualla purchased their home in 2001. At the time, the front yard consisted of two large bald cypress trees encircled with red brick flower beds planted with purple lantana and some grass, along with other traditional Houston shrubs, and a couple of trees that didn’t survive Hurricane Ike. Each year the Houston Heights Association recognizes recent construction or renovation in the neighborhood that improves upon the historic yet ever changing look and feel of our community’s landscape. The projects are submitted by residents through an open process and each are scored by a panel of volunteer judges. 2019 submissions were required to have been completed within the prior three years (2017 – 2019). Recipients of 2019 Volunteer Appreciation Awards Honored in July
Traditionally, our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner is one of the most exciting nights on the HHA calendar each year, as we honor those Heights residents who have gone above and beyond with their volunteer work in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, with the safety of our community in mind, we ultimately decided it was best to cancel this year's dinner due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
