Around the Heights
Thanks For Stepping Up to Save Our Sprinklers!
On October 15, we kicked off our Save Our Sprinklers campaign to raise the money needed to replace 10 stolen sprinkler vacuum breakers along Heights Boulevard and implement protection against future theft. With our fundraising deadline being November 15, it's been amazing to see the outpouring of support (in such a short time) from so many of our Heights neighbors, who quickly stepped up to help us combat this vandalism along the boulevard. Over the course of just one month, our neighbors donated $11,700! We are deeply [...]
Bob “Daddy-O” Wade’s El Gallo Monument in the 1800 Block of Heights Boulevard
TRUE NORTH 2020 lost an important member of its sculpture project when larger-than-life Texas folk artist Bob “Daddy-O” Wade passed away on Christmas Eve 2019. We were thrilled and honored when Bob’s widow, Lisa Wade—understanding how important the boulevard sculpture project was to him—made certain it moved forward as he had planned. With the type of collaborative work he had done with Wade for over 30 years, longtime friend, artist and fabricator, Will Larson, finalized and installed the late great’s last sculpture—down to every minute detail carefully [...]

Sherry Owens & Art Shirer’s Carbon Sink in the 1600 block of Heights Boulevard
Sherry Owens and Art Shirer’s collaborative sculpture for TRUE NORTH 2020 is created from discarded cuttings of the sinewy crape myrtle which are beautifully sculpted together with hardware and then carbon finished. Owens and Shirer say that Carbon Sink “is a visual metaphor of an organic storage place for the carbon dioxide present in our atmosphere [and] . . . this sculpture represents a depository for the greenhouse gases that affect our environment.” Owens was born in Mt. Vernon, Texas, and received her BFA from Southern Methodist [...]
October 2020 Yard of the Month: 827 Nicholson
Congratulations to our October Yard of the Month: Eric Gerard Martinez at 827 Nicholson If you are reading this, you are one of the last survivors…our October yard of the month has been taken over by gold-gilded skeletons. With any luck they will be destroyed in time for the holidays by 100 poinsettia plants. Eric Gerard Martinez's yard has incorporated a mix of macho ferns, ligularias, cascading belles, sea hibiscus and birds of paradise that is evolving into a New Orleans style tropical garden. If you notice [...]
