Congratulations to our May Yard of the Month: Jayne Porter and Pat Rutledge at 607 Gladys

Jayne Porter and Pat Rutledge have lived at 607 Gladys for 30 years. This nearly 100-year-old house has beds that were designed and installed by Bill Gray of Natureworks back in 2002. He placed the various large rocks throughout the landscape along with a dry riverbed made with midsize stones. The garden beds were designed to have something blooming throughout the year. There are lots of butterflies and many honey bees from their neighbor’s hive. The colors are pink, white, purple and lavender for the most part. The iron wagon wheel is real and belonged to Pat’s grandparents from San Antonio. Most of the landscaping lights are solar powered, along with some accent pieces from Buchanan’s and C&D Hardware.

The trees in the yard include a holly berry tree and crape myrtles, one fuchsia and two white. An evergreen wisteria vine grows on the lattice work at the front door and a Rangoon creeper is growing up the side of the house on ropes. The shrubs are night blooming jasmine, loropetalum, nandina, thorny olive, variegated ginger and a hibiscus. There are also yucca plants, African and butterfly irises, purple muhly grasses and foxtail ferns. Three rose bushes, fuchsia colored Maggie, coral colored Lafter, and a variegated red and white rose called Scentimental add a wonderful fragrance. Tea roses are interspersed throughout the beds and the agapanthus is just starting to bloom. Seasonal color is provided by assorted petunias, begonias, gerbera daisies, vincas, impatiens, dianthus, caladiums, society garlic, firecracker, purple Angelina and fall chrysanthemums.

We are excited to honor our May yard of the month recipients with a gift card donated by Another Place in Time. They are currently open Wed.-Sun and located at 421 W. 11th. St. at Tulane. They can be reached at 713-864-9717.
