Congratulations to our June Yard of the Month: Bart & Stacie Turner’s Garden at 301 W 6th
Bart and Stacie Turner’s garden at 301 W. 6th St started as just a nice place to sit in the morning and enjoy a cup of coffee. They started noticing butterflies, caterpillars, birds, bees, and ladybugs. Butterflies quickly became a favorite and how to get more butterfly action in the garden became an obsession. Bart’s Uncle Bo (owner of Landscape Innovations) originally designed and still helps Stacie maintain the garden. When designing the garden, Uncle Bo sat across the street during different times of the day and drew large, beautiful sketches of what he had in mind. His vision of semi-circle beds with mature River Birch Trees establishes the perimeter of the corner lot.
Sprawling white, pink, and coral Seamist Carpet Roses thrive under the River Birch Trees. Imperial Blue Plumbago and Autumn Red Lilies fill in the palette and surprise people as they walk along the sidewalk under the trees. The boulder garden along the south frontage attracts butterflies and has lots of Milkweed, pink Muhly Grass, pink Cone Flowers, Salvia, Aurea, Moss Verbena and Penta, Pink Rock Rose, Cuphea, and Black-eyed Susan.
The front yard inside the gate has long rectangular beds that run along the front and east of the house. These beds are also filled with Milkweed, Salvias, Pink Coneflowers, Golden Sphere Coreopsis, and other types of roses. There is a birdbath fountain in the middle of it all and two varieties of Redbuds.
The garden on the east side of the house has a pergola with Confederate Star Jasmine growing up the side of it. A Little Pinky Climbing Rose with trailing Rosemary is in front of the pergola growing up a metal obelisk and the Pink Mandevilla across from it helps flank the entrance to the pergola. Under the pergola, there is a seating area and two potted Japanese Maples with lime green Scottish Moss growing at the foot of both trees. For Bart and Stacie, the yard had to be functional, full of life, beautiful, and smell good!
We would like to thank Joshua’s Native Plants & Garden Antiques for honoring our yard of the month recipient with a wonderful gift card to their nursery.
