A little about the Houston Arboretum below!
Home to over 1,000 species of native plants and animals, the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center is an urban oasis right in the heart of Houston. Last year, more than 400,000 people visited the Arboretum, spending time exploring the outdoors on miles of trails winding through deep forest and ponds teeming with wildlife. The Arboretum’s 155 acres of native Gulf Coast habitat invite visitors to immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of nature.
The Arboretum serves the greater Houston area not only as a much-needed nature sanctuary and preserve, but also as a center for science education and interactive discovery. Last year, more than 10,000 students participated in our school field trip programs, which improve science literacy through guided hikes and hands-on exploration in our expansive outdoor classroom. Thousands more students – children and adults alike – joined us for other programs to learn about the benefits of bats, the secret life of trees, and the wide variety of birds that call the Arboretum home
The past year at the Arboretum has been marked by rapid progress on our master plan implementation and restoration efforts. This spring, our northwestern bayou ravine was reopened, featuring two expansive bridges, a brand new teaching platform, and dramatic views of one of the Arboretum’s most unique landscapes. In the late summer, our staff moved into a new office and volunteer work space and construction began on the Nature Center building, which will be renovated to include more classrooms and an exciting new Discovery Room. The final stage of our transformation will conclude early next year, as we debut a new children’s Nature Playscape, complete with elements designed to promote curiosity, creativity, exploration, and, of course, play.
Please join us on a tour of the new ravine and savanna trail systems!
