Each year the Houston Heights Association recognizes recent construction or renovation in the neighborhood that improves upon the historic yet ever changing look and feel of our community’s landscape. The projects are submitted by residents through an open process and each are scored by a panel of volunteer judges.
2019 submissions were required to have been completed within the prior three years (2017 – 2019). There are four categories, which are:
- Commercial New Construction
- Commercial Renovation
- Residential New Construction
- Residential Renovation
Please join us in congratulating the winners of the 2019 Community Improvement Awards!
Residential New Construction: 2040-A Arlington Street
Owners: Jim & Veronica Harrison
Long-time Heights residents Jim and Veronica Harrison spend most of their daytime hours in this one of a kind pool-house with full living quarters and a large external covered deck – all of which overlooks their lap pool. Situated on the lot adjacent to their existing home, this dog-trot inspired project aligns with the street’s existing historic bungalows. “Whether cooking out or watching movies by the fire in the fall and winter, there’s not a day that goes by that we aren’t out there,” said Jim. “As fate would have it, also works great as a home office!” Brett Zamore, of Brett Zamore Design, served as the Architect, Designer, and Builder.
Residential Renovation: 1226 Cortlandt Street
Owners: Brandon & Keleigh Krueger
Those who have renovated a historic home in the Houston Heights recently know all too well the challenges involved. Brandon and Keleigh Krueger were ultimately successful in navigating these challenges, resulting in an absolute gem for the Houston Heights. “Working with Creole Design and Tribe Build Co., our goal was to work within the historic district guidelines, which at times seemed impossible, to rebuild the 100-year-old original structure to its former glory while also creating a space for a family of five,” said Brandon. “Starting with only a few original walls, we were able to build a home that not only improved the community, but also created a home that will serve Heights families for the next 100 plus years.” Congratulations Team Krueger!
Commercial New Construction: 449 W. 19th Street (Heights Waterworks)
Perhaps better known for the meticulous renovation of the three historic structures at the Heights Waterworks site, or for the all-star tenant lineup, it was the new construction portion of the larger project that earned Braun Enterprises the top spot in the 2019 Commercial New Construction category. Demonstrating, yet again, their ability to develop attractive additions to our neighborhood, Braun spared no detail with this design. Strategically designed to create a more inviting pedestrian space between the buildings, the site embraces walkability and includes a large synthetic turf lawn that the whole family can enjoy.
Commercial Renovation: 718 W. 18th Street (Lowell Street Market)
Developed by Radom Capital, Lowell Street Market, at North Shepherd Drive and 18th Street, has been a welcomed addition to the neighborhood. Home to Snooze, an A.M. Eatery, the project features over 11,000 square feet of redeveloped and significantly improved existing warehouse buildings at one of the most highly trafficked intersections in the area. Lowell Street Market was carefully designed to include ample outdoor space for walking or lounging with friends and family.
