SUMMARY:Heights Garden Tour – 2215 Decatur
DESCRIPTION:October 10\, 2026 Garden Tour at 2215 Decatur \nThis month’s tour takes us to the Historic Old Sixth Ward. Bob and Cynthia Card have lived here for 25 years\, the garden evolving along with the house’s interior. The cottage garden now envelopes both the 1893 bungalow and artist studio in the back. This mix of flowering plants and herbs attracts a steady stream of pollinators to the garden enhancing the historic feel of the neighborhood. Cynthia treats her plants with tough love and says that if a plant needs special attention\, it is on its own. Notable ‘tough’ plants are Esperanza\, Duranta (Sweet Memory)\, various mallows\, Esperanza\, Lantana\, A Blue Butterfly Clerodendrum\, a bay tree\, Mexican Mint Marigold\, Rosemary\, and Vinca that have re-seeded themselves freely amongst the other plants. There is also a large Roselle Hibiscus\, from which they make tea. A few years ago\, the Cards bought the small bungalow next door offering it as a visiting artist residence and also for art exhibits. The fence between them was removed and the garden expanded. Old bricks\, collected from the neighborhood\, make vintage paths throughout the garden. The Cards have also installed several rain barrels that collect water for the garden. \nParking may be challenging as the streets are narrow\, but parking on the side streets and a short walk will give you an opportunity to observe the historic neighborhood and all the original houses still on this block. The houses are very close together which seems to have brought the neighbors closer together as well. \nWe would like to thank Wabash Feed & Garden for the nice gift card awarded to our October Garden Tour recipients. \nWabash Feed & Garden 4537 N. SUMMARY:Heights Garden Tour - 831 Cortlandt
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a garden tour\, Saturday\, September 12 from 10-11am – 831 Cortlandt \nWe are delighted to be able to bring you Mark McKinnon’s woodland garden here in the Heights. This garden has been featured in more than one Garden Conservancy tour and was recently included in Pam Penick’s book ‘Gardens of Texas’. \nFrom the street\, the house is almost invisible\, camouflaged with mature trees with a thick\, shade-loving native understory. A row of river birches in the side yard lead back to a shady and secluded courtyard containing a large pond\, a water retention trough\, and a horseherb lawn surrounded on three sides by covered porches. In the pond\, water is filtered through a planter of aquatic plants which is also a fountain adding the soothing sound of falling water to this secluded getaway. \nThe landscape has been carefully planned for resiliency\, water retention\, shade\, and privacy all on a normal-sized Heights lot. \nWe want to thank New Roots Landscaping Nursery & Antiques for the nice gift card awarded to our September garden tour recipient. SUMMARY:June 13th Garden Tour 2026 -347 West 27th St.
DESCRIPTION:June 13th Garden Tour 2026  10-11am \nPaula and Ellen – 347 West 27th St.  \n  \nThis charming traditional Heights Bungalow sits gracefully on a rare triple lot\, offering an expansive canvas of green space that immediately captured the hearts of Ellen and Paula Parker-Krantz. From the moment they laid eyes on this home\, they saw beyond its classic façade to the incredible potential it held — not just as a living space\, but as a personal sanctuary where gardening and outdoor enjoyment could flourish.\n\nWhen they purchased the home in 2022\, it was adorned with a few gorgeous\, mature trees\, three one hundred-year-old pecans\, a dogwood\, a maple and magnolia. A minimal sprinkling of azaleas\, provided a natural frame for the home without overwhelming it. This subtle landscaping was perfect\, leaving the structure and space open to Ellen and Paula’s vision. They dreamed of crafting inviting garden areas and intimate outdoor retreats\, both front and back\, that would complement the bungalow’s traditional charm while reflecting their personal style.\n\nThe yard has come to life over time and they have made some changes along the way. In front of the iron fence\, they have planted mostly Texas Natives including salvias in pinks and blues\, various lilies in yellows and reds\, agapanthus\, lantana\, pentas\, copper canyon daisies\, spotted iron plants and phlox. In the front beds\, they added azaleas\, variegated ginger\, ligularia\, pink\, lavender and white pentas\, agapanthus\, pink and white caladiums\, night blooming jasmine\, hostas\, and loropetalum.\n\nIn May of 2024\, sadly\, the derecho took down the largest of the three pecan trees. Where the pecan tree once stood is now a new garden with dwarf wax myrtles\, Texas natives and grasses. \n  \nWe want to thank Joshua’s Native Plants & Garden Antiques for the nice gift card awarded to Paula and Ellen for our June garden tour.  713.862.7444  www.joshuasnativeplants.net  502 W. 18th St \n

SUMMARY:May Heights Garden Tour - 4507 Apollo
DESCRIPTION:“Nature Lover’s Delight” \nBackyard of Bob and Cindy Wolfram \n4507 Apollo \nOur May 9th Garden Tour \n10-11am \n  \nThe Wolfram yard has transitioned since our move to the neighborhood in 1998.  We began with soil work with the goal to reduce the clay in our yard.  With routine mulching and maintaining the beds\, the beds are now in great shape\, and we use Leaf Mold Compost to maintain.  In the earlier days\, the beds changed including developing the kidney bed in the front yard and expanding the other beds in this area as well.  The backyard was transitioned to add a water feature\, and the main bed is approximately 20 feet deep\, supporting an Italian Fig\, two apple trees along with the blackberries that were planted to show the children in the neighborhood how berries grew and they did not just arrive in a package at the store. \n  \nAfter Hurricane Ike destroyed Bob and Cindy’s yard and plants\, we decided to rethink our yard and researched how to certify the yard as a Natural Wildlife Habitat. After years of intentional plant selection to ensure the yard provided shelter\, food\, and water\, our goal was achieved and is ongoing with changes as opportunity arises. \n  \nThe efforts continue to reduce the grass space and work to provide additional plants that support the butterflies\, bees\, and hummingbirds along with the Blue Jays that love the peanuts provided.  During the different seasons\, the seed selection changes to support the migration of the birds in the area. \n  \nA list of the plants is provided for your information as you visit the yard.  Look forward to hosting the Heights Garden Club. \n  \nWe want to thank New Roots Landscaping Nursery & Antiques for the gift card awarded to our May garden tour recipients.  New Roots is located 5117 N. Main St.  713-485-4791  www.newrootslandscapinghouston.com \n
