Sunday Streets HTX Is Back

19th Street to be closed from Heights Boulevard to Shepherd on Sunday, October 12 from 12:00 to 4:00

Heights Boulevard will serve as the anchor for the Fall 2014 kick-off of Sunday Streets HTX, a program celebrating the streets of Houston by opening them for walking, biking, dancing, and other physical activity. Back in April, the pilot program started on White Oak Drive at Heights and extended east past I45. This month, the route is on West 19th Street and extends westward from Heights to North Shepherd.

All cross streets will be closed between 12:00 noon and 4:00 PM. HPD officers will be available to help route traffic around the closed street segment. Don’t plan to drive into or out of the closed area or to park there during the closure.

Signs announcing the closing should be up at the ends of the route by the time you read this. Portable toilets and hand-washing stations at those locations and trash and recycling containers along the route should follow.

Barriers should be brought in by the morning of the 12th, but the actual street closing is scheduled for 12:00 noon. The event will start wrapping up around 3:45, and streets will reopen at 4:00 PM.

In April, only 3,000 people attended on a cold and rainy day, but the May and June events each drew over 20,000 walkers, skaters, bicycle riders, and curious people. Organizers expect at least that many for the fall closings.

Mayor’s Office of Special Events, Public Works & Engineering, Health Department, and Houston Police Department cooperate to close the streets and provide the basic infrastructure for the expected crowds, but leave it to the neighborhoods to make them “events” unique to each area.

Representatives from the City of Houston met with business and property owners along the route in late September. The 19th Street merchants are confident their experience with White Linen Night and similar events prepares them well to host Sunday Streets.

The event continues on November 2 in the Greater Third Ward along Dowling, West Alabama, and Almeda from Elgin to Arbor. The final fall Sunday Streets HTX will be December 7 in the East End/Fifth Ward along Navigation and York from Jensen to Clinton. The city plans to make this an annual program moving around the city, with three monthly events each spring and three each fall.

Heights Garden Club

October’s garden tour will be held at 10:00 AM on the 11th at the Eskelson residence, 636 E. 12th St. You may have seen the colorful front yard and sidewalk vegetable garden featured on this double lot, but now is your chance to also see the private backyard garden. A few years ago, the owner reclaimed her grown children’s playground to create one for herself. She has been experimenting to find plants that will bloom in the many different types of shade created by a two-century-old live oak which is on the Harris County tree registry of exceptional trees.

We will have two meetings in November. The regular second Saturday meeting (the 8th) will be held at the home of Duston Mason at 125 E. 2nd St. He will speak to us about incorporating native plants into our garden for the purpose of contributing to a healthier ecology and show how even a limited space can accommodate natives with his roof top garden. On November 12, the garden club will be hosting a Harvest Potluck at the Houston Heights Fire Station at 7:00 PM. Think about what you would like to share from your garden.

Monthly Meeting & Happy Hour

Join us on the second Monday of every month to meet neighbors, hear interesting programs, and learn about events. Doors open to the Fire Station at 6:30 PM for happy hour, with the monthly program commencing at 7:00 PM. Everyone is invited!

Skyline Screamers: Ghost Tales Under the Stars

Bring your blankets or folding chairs, bug spray and snacks, and a flashlight to light your way home. The Houston Storytellers Guild presents its annual free ghost story performance at HHA’s Marmion Park on Friday, October 31, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Listen to such veteran ghost tale tellers as Alice Evergreen, Brian Herod, and Scott Bumgartner, as well as some new performers, as they share scary tales from Houston and beyond. For adults and kids who like to be scared.

After HSG tellers perform their stories, members of the audience are invited to share a scary story or experience that they have had.

Director Election Schedule

Seven of the fifteen positions on the HHA Board of Directors will be filled by election over the next few months. Five of the positions are opening due to normal expiration of terms, two by early termination of terms. Only five candidates were nominated at the September General Meeting and have consented to serve, but we are proceeding with the election. These five nominees will serve three-year terms; the two one-year terms will be filled by the 2015 Board at its Organizational Meeting. The ballot will provide a space to indicate if you wish to be considered for one of these positions.

The remaining schedule for the election of Directors to serve terms starting in 2015 will be as follows, in accordance with the By-Laws and Policies of the Association.

• October 13 at the General Meeting, nominees or their representatives may speak on their qualifications for three minutes. They will also draw for ballot positions at the beginning of the meeting.

• By the Friday following the General Meeting (October 17) the Election Committee will mail a ballot to each member in good standing whose dues are currently paid as of October 1. (Members invoiced by August 15 and not paid by October 1 are deemed not in good standing.)

• Ballots must be received by November 8, at the close of the U. S. Post Office.

• November 10, before the General Meeting, polls will be open for secret balloting in person from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM sharp. The Election Committee will tabulate ballots and announce the results during the meeting. The results will also be published in the December newsletter.

Matt Bedingfield

Heights resident for the past ten years and an active participant in Boulevard Beautification and other projects; member of the Heights Finance Committee with a successful career in financial accounting; active in many boulevard beautification projects. Our involvement in the community builds the character and history worth preserving.

Laura Menefee

I am a native Houstonian living in the Heights for over 15 years. Began volunteering for Spring and Holiday Home Tours after retiring from AT&T. Appointed to 2014 HHA Board to fill vacancy. Currently serving as HHA Volunteer Coordinator. I would appreciate your vote to continue supporting our neighborhood.

Kenny Terrell

My wife and I moved to the Heights after we got married for the small-town feel. We enjoy volunteering for the many events in the Heights, such as the Home Tour, Bike Rally, and the 5K. I would like to expand the HHA’s reach to incorporate a young professional demographic.

Cressandra Thibobeaux

My passion for the Heights combined with my commitment to HHA’s mission statement is my motivation for becoming a board member. Because I run a non-profit, have board experience, coupled with my diverse background and interest to be more involved makes me an excellent candidate as a HHA Board Member.

Cooley School Historical Marker Dedication

You are invited to help commemorate and honor Cooley Public School (1894-1980) with an official Texas Historical Marker on Sunday, October 12, 4:00 PM at the site of Cooley School on the southwest corner of 17th and Rutland Streets. Light refreshments will follow the dedication ceremony.


About Cooley School

The first school in Houston Heights opened its doors in 1894 as a one-room schoolhouse at the corner of 17th Avenue and Rutland Street. Daniel Denton Cooley (“Father Of Houston Heights”) and Helen Grace Winfield Cooley believed in the importance of education and financed the school’s construction.

In response to Houston Heights’ rapid growth, Cooley School was expanded in 1906 and 1912. It was destroyed by fire in 1961, was rebuilt, and continued to operate as an elementary school until 1980, when it became an HISD administrative building.

In 2010, HISD sold the property to Sullivan Brothers Builders for residential development. In style and ambience, the resulting neighborhood of homes is said to be reminiscent of the Heights’ early years.

Fire Station Commemorative Bricks

The final phase of the Fire Station renovation includes adding a brick courtyard to enhance the 12th Street entrance to the historic structure. Here’s your opportunity to create a lasting tribute to your loved ones, whether two- or four-legged.

You can reserve a personalized brick using the form inserted in the paper copy of our last newsletter and available online here.

Engraving on the bricks will take place in January and February 2015, before the 100th anniversary celebration of the Fire Station dedication on Sunday, March 15, 2015.

Founder’s Day at HHWC

The Houston Heights Woman’s Club will host its annual “Founder’s Day” reception and presentation of the Hortense Ward Appreciation Award on Thursday, October 16, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the club’s historic clubhouse at 1846 Harvard Street. Lisa Falkenberg, columnist for the Houston Chronicle, will be the guest speaker. Dinner will be served. RSVP to info@, please

Since its establishment in 1900, the Houston Heights Woman’s Club has been involved in the empowerment of women and the support of women’s issues. In commemoration of this history, the Club chooses to reward a young woman making a positive impact on her community. Each year, the HHWC offers a small scholarship to a female South Texas College of Law student whose legal career will be dedicated to the empowerment and service of others.

Hortense Ward was the first woman sworn in to the Texas State Bar. She wrote the charter for the HHWC and was an advocate for women’s issues, campaigning for suffrage and other rights for women. In 1918, Hortense Ward was the first woman to be registered to vote in Harris County. It is a great honor and pleasure to offer a scholarship in her name.

Print Layout Specialist

Create the print and PDF editions using supplied templates, articles, and photographs under the direction of the Editor. Requires skill with Adobe InDesign or similar program.

Web Layout Specialist

Create the HTML edition using supplied templates, articles, and photographs under the direction of the Editor. Requires skill with Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe InDesign, or similar program.

Copy Editor/Proofreader

Gather articles from other HHA committees, edit them into standard formats, correct errors, and crosscheck stories for consistency under the direction of the Editor. Requires use of Microsoft Word.


Cover HHA events, taking pictures and/or writing stories as assigned by the Editor.

Managing Editor

Supervise and coordinate the team members listed above; coordinate with HHA Officers, Committee Chairs, contractors, and volunteers as necessary; coordinate with printer/mailer to produce print edition; coordinate with Webmaster to publish PDF and HTML editions; handle inquiries and submissions from members and readers.
