Donovan Park Sign Dedication
Please join us at 10:00 AM on September 6 at Donovan Park for the dedication of a new entry sign funded by descendants of James G. Donovan. Donovan was the last city attorney of Houston Heights and the father of Marcella Perry, a founding member of the Houston Heights Association.
This beautiful new sign will proudly display the year of the park’s founding in 1983 and was donated in full by the Saunders Family. We’ll have the honor of dedicating the sign with the Saunders Family. The dedication will be open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
9th Annual Bicycle Rally & Scavenger Hunt
Enjoy the fun and camaraderie of the ORIGINAL Heights bike ride.
Is your bicycle ready to ride? Registration is now open for the 9th Annual Bicycle Rally & Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, October 5.
This casual, self-paced ride is open to riders of all ages. (This is not a race!) Ride options include the classic 20-mile route starting at 8:00 AM or the shorter 5-mile family ride designed for kids and their adult companions starting at 2:00 PM - or you can do both. The Rally starts and ends in Marmion Park.
There are fun prizes for the riders who correctly identify the most mystery sites along the route. After you finish the ride, stay and enjoy the Post-Ride Party in the Park starting at 3:30 PM. There will be entertainment and great snacks along with awards and door prizes. All riders must finish by 4:00 PM to be eligible for awards and prizes. The Awards Ceremony will begin at 4:30 PM, and you must be present to win. All Kids riding the 5-mile course will receive ribbons.
Not a bicyclist? Want to help? Volunteers are needed to staff registration, at the rally checkpoint, and scoring the clue sheets at the end of the day. If you are interested, please email or call 713-861-4002 and leave a message on extension 6.

Annual Heights Urban Forestry Day
If you love our extraordinary Heights trees and remarkable urban canopy, participate in “Living In Tandem With Trees,” our annual Heights Urban Forestry Day, on Sunday, September 21.
• Adopt your own three- or five-gallon tree. Trees for Houston will donate 300-400 native trees and plants in 25 varieties, and we will distribute them free to good homes. Email your full name and planting address to to sign up for a tree.
• Register your champion tree on the Harris County Tree Registry. The new edition of the Registry debuts in 2015.
• Get details to preserve your champion tree with a special City of Houston designation.
• Ride or walk a route to see Heights champion trees. The Forest Service will be debuting their Tree Trails app with a special Heights trail.
• Join the HHA Urban Forestry team.
Hosted by Houston Heights Association, Trees for Houston, Texas A&M Forest Service, City of Houston Urban Forestry, and Reagan High School Eco Club at the Houston Heights City Hall & Fire Station (12th & Yale) and in the surrounding Greater Heights area on Sunday, September 21, 2014, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Monthly Meeting & Happy Hour
Join us on the second Monday of every month to meet neighbors, hear interesting programs, and learn about events. Doors open to the Fire Station at 6:30 PM for happy hour, with the monthly program commencing at 7:00 PM. Everyone is invited!

An evening devoted to education and learning in the Heights. An esteemed panel with a respected moderator will speak and field questions.

Fire Station Commemorative Bricks
The final phase of the Fire Station renovation includes adding a brick courtyard enhancing the 12th Street entrance to the historic structure. Here’s your opportunity to create a lasting tribute to your loved ones, whether two- or four-legged.
You can reserve a personalized brick using the form inserted in the print edition of this newsletter and available here. Engraving on the bricks will take place in January and February 2015, before the 100th anniversary celebration of the Fire Station dedication on Sunday, March 15, 2015.
Forms and payment must be received on or before December 31, 2014. Mail orders to: Houston Heights Association, 107 W. 12th Street, Houston, TX 77008, or attend a General Meeting where bricks can be purchased by credit card or check.
Director Election Schedule
Seven of the fifteen positions on the HHA Board of Directors will be filled by election over the next few months. Five of the positions are opening due to normal expiration of terms, two by early termination of terms. The five nominees receiving the highest numbers of votes will serve three-year terms; the nominees receiving the next-highest numbers will serve one-year terms. See the right column for a list of current Directors.
The schedule for the election of Directors to serve terms starting in 2015 will be as follows, in accordance with the By-Laws and Policies of the Association. [Note: Some dates were incorrect in our August issue.]
• September 8 at the General Meeting, the floor will be opened for nominations to the Board of Directors. Nominators and nominees must be current members of the Association. Nominators may speak for two minutes. Please be sure before you nominate someone that your nominee will commit to serve. Individuals may not nominate themselves, nor may nominees speak on their own behalf at this meeting. Seconding speeches are no longer necessary.
• By September 10, the Election Committee will distribute to nominees election packets containing bylaws, policies, articles of incorporation, committee responsibility list, detailed election schedule, and a statement confirming that the nominee has read the bylaws and policies and agrees to serve in accordance with them if elected.
• By 5:00 PM on the Friday following the General Meeting (September 12), signed statements from nominees are due, as well as a 50-word (maximum) statement from each nominee for publication in the October newsletter and on the website. Statements longer than 50 words (as counted by Microsoft Word) will be truncated after the fiftieth word when published.
• October 13 at the General Meeting, nominees or their representatives may speak on their qualifications for three minutes. They will also draw for ballot positions at the beginning of the meeting.
• By the Friday following the General Meeting (October 17) the Election Committee will mail a ballot with a control number to each member in good standing whose dues are currently paid as of October 1. (Members invoiced by August 15 and not paid by October 1 are deemed not in good standing.)
• Ballots must be received by November 8, at the close of the U. S. Post Office, with control numbers intact.
• November 10, before the General Meeting, polls will be open for secret balloting in person from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM sharp. The Election Committee will tabulate ballots and announce the results during the meeting. The results will also be published in the December newsletter.

Shortly before going to press we learned of the death of Glen Putman of Malone Printing, 2007 Corporate Citizen and third-generation Heights business owner who has provided services to HHA for many years. We will miss you, Glen.

Bicycle Rally Details
THIS IS NOT A RACE. ALL RIDERS MUST WEAR HELMETS.
There is no rain date for this event. Rain or shine, the event goes on as planned. Sorry, no refunds will be made.
20-Mile Heights Bicycle Rally & Scavenger Hunt:
$20.00 if mailed in (postmarked by October 1)
$20.00 + $2.65 fee for online sign-up (prior to October 3)
$25.00 on the day of the race at Marmion Park; credit cards accepted
5-Mile Heights Bicycle Rally & Scavenger Hunt:
$10.00 if mailed in (postmarked by October 1)

8:00 AM - Packet pickup begins. Participants in the 20-mile route may start their ride.
2:00 PM - Participants in the 5-mile route may start their ride.
3:30 PM - Post-Ride Party begins.
4:00 PM - Deadline for completing the rally.
4:30 PM - Awards Ceremony begins.
Each entrant will be issued a rally card, a rally map, and a scavenger hunt clue list. There will be one combination checkpoint and water station mid-way on the route. The clue list describes a sight or object that can be seen along the rally course. The person who finds the most mystery objects will be named the winner.
To be eligible for prizes and awards, entrants must complete the rally no later than 4:00 pm, and submit their rally card and completed scavenger hunt clue list at Marmion Park. The rally card must have been validated at the check point. You must be present to win.
All packet pickup will be at Marmion Park, 18th Street and Heights Boulevard, beginning at 8:00 AM on Rally Day.
SAG (Support And Gear) service will be provided for riders unable to complete the route. SAG vehicle drivers will pick up broken-down bikes and tired riders and return them to Marmion Park.
Bicycle Rally Vendor Tables Available
HHA Business Members, showcase your business to over 700 participants and spectators in our 9th Annual Heights Bicycle Rally & Scavenger Hunt. Booth spaces are approximately 10x10 feet and are located around the perimeter of Marmion Park. Bring your own setup and canopy if you wish. Businesses may set up their booth any time after 12:00 PM.
Cost per space is $100. You can purchase online here or mail your check to HHA, 107 W. 12th St, 77008.

Heights Garden Club
Thank you to everyone who came and made our first Annual Plant and Seed Swap a great success. We would also like to thank the contributors for our door prizes: Pam Dunker of Wabash Feed & Garden Store for bringing a peach tree, Ken Cousino of Quality Feed for donating a $40 gift certificate, and San Jacinto Environmental for donating a 40 lb. bag of Microlife. We would also like to thank Joshua Kornegay of Joshua’s Native Plants for bring a flat of flowers to share. We hope everyone had a good time and came away with something special for their garden.
Our next meeting is at 10:00 AM, Saturday, September 13 and will be held at Zone 9 Tropicals, a retail nursery that specializes in rare and uncommon tropical plants. They are primarily a mail order nursery and also have frequent sales when they are open to the public, but because of the irregular hours you may have missed this great little gardening resource in the Heights. The owner, Wayne Dupont, will be our tour guide and can answer most questions about tropical and semi-tropical plants that will do well in our area. Zone 9 Tropicals is located at 1015 Arlington.
October’s garden tour will be at the Eskelson residence at 636 E. 12th Street on Saturday, October 11 at 10:00 AM. Please check our Facebook page or our website at for information about upcoming meetings and workdays.
Founder’s Day at HHWC
The Houston Heights Woman’s Club will host its annual “Founder’s Day” reception on Thursday, October 16, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the club’s historic clubhouse at 1846 Harvard Street. Lisa Falkenberg, columnist for the Houston Chronicle, will be the guest speaker. Light refreshments will be served.
Since its establishment in 1900, the Houston Heights Woman’s Club has been involved in the empowerment of women and the support of women’s issues. In commemoration of this history, the Club chooses to reward a young woman making a positive impact on her community. Each year, the HHWC offers a small scholarship to a female South Texas College of Law student whose legal career will be dedicated to the empowerment and service of others.
Named for Hortense Ward, the first women sworn in to the Texas State Bar, this scholarship helps to continue the legacy of this historic organization. Ward wrote the charter for the HHWC and was an advocate for woman’s issues, campaigning for suffrage and other rights for women. In 1918, Hortense Ward was the first woman to be registered to vote in Harris County. It is a great honor and pleasure to offer a scholarship in her name.
Reading Tutors Needed at Harvard
Have you been trying to find something to do with your Tuesday and Thursday mornings for the next nine months? Do you want to give back to the community? If so, there is something you can do with your time that is both rewarding and beneficial to others.
“Project Read” is seeking volunteers to tutor first-graders who need additional help in reading at Harvard Elementary here in the Heights. All the instructional materials are provided for the tutors. You can commit to tutoring one morning or both mornings per week between 8:00 and 10:00 AM. If you are interested, please contact Joyce Worthington, 713-862-4647.
